When to use FBX

Animated character pipelines

FBX is the standard for moving rigged characters between Maya, Blender, Unreal, and Unity. Skeletons, skin weights, and animation clips survive the trip.

Motion-capture data

MoCap sessions typically deliver FBX files with baked animation. Import into Unreal or Unity for retargeting to your character rig.

Architectural visualization

Some ArchViz teams use FBX for moving scenes from 3ds Max to Unreal Engine. Materials and geometry transfer cleanly.

Convert to web formats

Use Fast3D to convert FBX assets to GLB for web display, OBJ for static mesh editing, or STL for 3D printing.

Common FBX workflows

Workflow 1

Maya → Unreal character pipeline

Rig and animate a character in Maya, export as FBX with embedded media, import into Unreal Engine for game development.

Workflow 2

FBX → GLB web conversion

Drop FBX assets into Fast3D to convert to GLB. Skeletons, animation, and textures survive — load the GLB in Three.js or model-viewer for web display.

Workflow 3

FBX → STL for 3D printing

Pose a rigged character in Blender, apply the pose as rest pose, export as FBX, then convert to STL for 3D printing.

About FBX

FBX is Autodesk's proprietary format and the industry default for moving rigged, animated 3D characters between DCC tools like Maya, Blender, and Unreal Engine. It supports skeletons, blend shapes, and keyframed animation. Fast3D can load FBX for conversion into lighter web-friendly formats, but does not export FBX.
