Why convert FBX to STL?
3D print FBX character models
Slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, CHITUBOX) read STL natively but rarely accept FBX. Convert first, then slice.
Send FBX meshes to fabricators
STL is the standard format for service bureaus and rapid-prototyping shops. They typically will not accept FBX.
Mesh repair workflows
STL is the input format for Meshmixer, Netfabb, and Magics. Convert FBX before running mesh-healing workflows.
Tips for FBX → STL
Only the bind pose survives
STL is static geometry, so animated FBX characters bake to their default pose (usually T-pose) before printing. Pose the character in Blender first if you want your 3D-printed figure in a dynamic stance.
STL is uniform grey
STL has no material or texture support. Your 3D-printed character will render as plain grey geometry in the slicer preview and print as bare plastic — that's a format limitation. Paint or finish the printed part separately, or use a multicolor 3D printer.
Watertight meshes required
STL slicers demand manifold geometry. FBX character meshes often have minor defects — expect some slicing errors and run repair tools.
Binary STL by default
Fast3D exports binary STL, which is roughly 4x smaller than ASCII STL.
Common issues when converting FBX to STL
Slicer reports 'non-manifold edges'
Fix
Character meshes from Maya/3ds Max frequently have minor mesh defects. Open the STL in Meshmixer or Windows 3D Builder, run auto-repair, then re-export. For serious defects, retopologize the mesh in Blender first.
Character prints in T-pose
Fix
STL is static — only the default pose survives. To print a posed character, open the FBX in Blender, pose the armature, apply the pose as the rest pose, then export to FBX and convert to STL.
Print scale is wrong
Fix
FBX stores coordinates in centimeters by default; STL slicers often expect millimeters. Scale by 10× in the slicer, or convert units before export.
